Moonrise Kingdom

Friday, June 13th, 6:30pm

Moonrise Kingdom (2012), the offbeat and unforgettable coming-of-age story co-written by Roman Coppola and Wes Anderson, and directed in Anderson’s unmistakable style. Set on a fictional island in the summer of 1965, it follows two twelve-year-olds who fall in love and run away together—sparking a community-wide search and a string of quietly profound moments.

All at once whimsical, melancholy, and visually meticulous, Moonrise Kingdom is a perfect match for this month’s theme: Art, Music, and Imagination. Nominated for Best Original Screenplay, the film is beloved for its storybook aesthetic, evocative soundtrack, and poignant exploration of young love and the longing to belong.

The Cotton Club

Friday, June 27th, 6:30pm

The Cotton Club (1984), Francis Ford Coppola’s stylish and ambitious homage to the legendary Harlem nightclub of the same name. Set during the Prohibition era, the film follows the intersecting lives of musicians, dancers, and gangsters against a backdrop of jazz, danger, and dazzling performance.

Starring Richard Gere, Gregory Hines, Diane Lane, and Lonette McKee, The Cotton Club blends music and drama with lavish visuals and unforgettable choreography. With period-perfect costumes, real-life inspiration, and original musical numbers, it’s a cinematic tribute to one of the most iconic venues in American history.

A vivid blend of historical fiction and visual spectacle, The Cotton Club is a fitting feature for our Art, Music, and Imagination series—where storytelling lives not just in the script, but in every frame, every note, and every detail.

July and August Theme Sneak Peak: The writer’s room

Before they directed, produced, or brought stories to life on screen, they wrote.

This summer, Coppola Movie Nights celebrates the storytelling roots of the Coppola family with The Writers’ Room—a series dedicated to the written word behind the films. From intimate character portraits to sweeping narratives, these screenplays reflect the voices, perspectives, and imagination of five family members whose work began on the page.

Featuring films written by Eleanor, Roman, Sofia, Gia, and Francis Coppola, this series is a tribute to the craft of writing—and to the creative legacy of a family that’s helped shape cinema from the inside out.
