Apocalypse Now (Final Cut)
Friday, January 16th, 5:30pm
“Apocalypse Now,” directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is a 1979 war epic set during the Vietnam War. This cinematic masterpiece, inspired by Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness,” stars Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando, delivering unforgettable performances. Renowned for its haunting depiction of the horrors of war, the film remains a landmark in cinematic history.
Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, “Apocalypse Now” won the prestigious Palme d’Or and garnered critical acclaim, earning eight Academy Award nominations and winning for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Celebrated for its stunning visuals and powerful storytelling, the film offers a timeless exploration of the hypocrisies and madness of war. Today, “Apocalypse Now” is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
“The Conversation,” a 1974 thriller written, produced, and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is a masterful exploration of surveillance and privacy. Starring Gene Hackman in a career-defining role, the film follows a reclusive surveillance expert, who discovers a potential murder through a routine wiretapping job.
Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or, the film received critical acclaim and earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Sound. Selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”, “The Conversation” remains a timeless commentary on the ethical implications of technology and privacy, resonating with audiences even today.
