Lost in Translation

Friday, DECEMBER 12th, 6:30pm

Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation (2003) is a quiet character study set in Tokyo, where two Americans—aging actor Bob Harris and recently married Charlotte—form an unexpected connection while struggling with their own personal uncertainties. The film earned Coppola the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and received additional nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Bill Murray).

With Bill Murray’s understated performance and Scarlett Johansson’s grounded portrayal, the film focuses less on plot and more on the small interactions that define their brief friendship. Lost in Translation looks at loneliness, displacement, and the odd comfort that can come from finding someone who understands you, even if only for a short time.

Isle of Dogs

Friday, December 19th, 6:30 pm

Isle of Dogs (2018) is a stop-motion animated feature written by Wes Anderson alongside Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Kunichi Nomura. Set in a stylized near-future Japan, the film follows twelve-year-old Atari as he journeys to Trash Island to find his missing dog, Spots. Along the way, he teams up with a group of exiled dogs, each with their own quirks, as they navigate a world full of danger, humor, and unexpected friendship.

The film combines Anderson’s distinctive visual style and dry humor with a gently offbeat story, creating a unique mix of adventure and heart. Isle of Dogs was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score at the Academy Awards and has been praised for its meticulous craftsmanship, imaginative world-building, and the warm, funny relationships at the center of the story.

January preview: Runaways & Reckonings

In January we follow characters in motion, leaving behind the lives they’ve built in search of something they can’t quite name. But distance doesn’t quiet what’s unfinished. January’s theme explores the inevitable moment when the past rises back up, and escape turns into the need for real confrontation.
