In June, we’re shined a light on films that elevate cinema as an art form—where the visuals, music, and storytelling come together in bold, expressive ways.
More than just stories—they’re experiences. Whimsical, layered, and a little offbeat, both films in our June series reflect the spirit of Art, Music, and Imagination in their own unforgettable way.
Moonrise Kingdom
Friday, June 13th, 6:30pm
Moonrise Kingdom (2012), the offbeat and unforgettable coming-of-age story co-written by Roman Coppola and Wes Anderson, and directed in Anderson’s unmistakable style. Set on a fictional island in the summer of 1965, it follows two twelve-year-olds who fall in love and run away together—sparking a community-wide search and a string of quietly profound moments.
All at once whimsical, melancholy, and visually meticulous, Moonrise Kingdom is a perfect match for this month’s theme: Art, Music, and Imagination. Nominated for Best Original Screenplay, the film is beloved for its storybook aesthetic, evocative soundtrack, and poignant exploration of young love and the longing to belong.
The Cotton Club
Friday, June 27th, 6:30pm
The Cotton Club (1984), Francis Ford Coppola’s stylish and ambitious homage to the legendary Harlem nightclub of the same name. Set during the Prohibition era, the film follows the intersecting lives of musicians, dancers, and gangsters against a backdrop of jazz, danger, and dazzling performance.
Starring Richard Gere, Gregory Hines, Diane Lane, and Lonette McKee, The Cotton Club blends music and drama with lavish visuals and unforgettable choreography. With period-perfect costumes, real-life inspiration, and original musical numbers, it’s a cinematic tribute to one of the most iconic venues in American history.
A vivid blend of historical fiction and visual spectacle, The Cotton Club is a fitting feature for our Art, Music, and Imagination series—where storytelling lives not just in the script, but in every frame, every note, and every detail.
October Theme Sneak Peak: In the Shadows
This October, Coppola Movie Nights turns to the shadows.
Francis Ford Coppola’s darker works reveal a gothic imagination—stories of romance, dread, and the supernatural, told with a haunting elegance. Less about sudden fright and more about atmosphere, these films capture the eerie beauty of the season.
