Vintage & Winemaking Notes
2021 was an unusual vintage with a unique charm. Heavy rains during the early summer impacted pollination, yielding a light fruit crop. However, the subsequent record-setting heat and extreme dry conditions in the Willamette Valley proved to be beneficial, resulting in optimal grape ripening. This distinctive combination of a low yield and ample warmth led to wines of exceptional balance, intensity, and grace.
The 2021 Pinot Gris was sourced from Block I of our estate vineyard. The fruit was picked early—after the sparkling and rosé but before the Pinot Noir. Early harvesting protected the fruit from rain, ensuring a clean and pristine crop. This resulted in a wine characterized by sweeter fruit notes, a departure from its usual zesty profile, showcasing the distinctive characteristics of the 2021 vintage. Despite the seemingly sweeter flavors, our 2021 Pinot Gris was fermented to dryness, having no residual sugar in the finished wine.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 Pinot Gris exudes a lively character with aromatics of grapefruit, citrusy florals, pink lady apple, and a touch of dried apricot. Lucious pear and citrus flavors intertwine with tropical fruit notes, while a subtle stone minerality imparts an elegant edge to the wine. The 2021 Pinot Gris is a captivating expression born from an extraordinary vintage.
